PsyPost reports that new research involving 525 participants found a statistically significant association between general intelligence and factual wine knowledge, even after researchers accounted for professional wine-industry experience and participants’ wine-drinking preferences. Participants completed a 68-question wine knowledge assessment adapted from Wine & Spirit Education Trust material, with intelligence accounting for about 9.4% of the variation in wine knowledge scores. Importantly, the study measured knowledge of subjects such as regions, viticulture and winemaking, rather than sensory tasting ability, so the findings do not suggest that people with higher IQ scores necessarily have better palates or judge wines more accurately.
