Vinetur reports that Portuguese wine producer Aveleda is piloting an artificial intelligence system capable of identifying grape varieties automatically as grapes arrive at its Penafiel winery. The technology analyses images of berries and clusters during unloading, assigning probability scores to different varieties rather than relying on definitive classifications. Results will be compared with assessments from experienced specialists to determine accuracy, including for mixed-variety deliveries. If successful, the system could improve vineyard-to-cellar traceability, reduce identification errors and strengthen production quality control. The project represents a potentially important development in the practical application of artificial intelligence to winemaking.
