German Court Restricts Marketing on Wine QR-Code Labels

Dionysus reports that a Cologne Administrative Court ruling could have significant implications for European wine labelling after judges determined that electronic pages containing mandatory ingredient and nutritional information must not include promotional content. The September ruling, now receiving industry attention, concerned a retailer whose QR-linked wine information pages featured its corporate logo and a button leading to additional product descriptions and customer reviews. The court upheld an order requiring these elements to be removed, interpreting European Union regulations as prohibiting marketing alongside mandatory disclosures. Although the decision is not yet final, producers, importers and retailers using QR codes may need to review their digital labelling arrangements to ensure compliance.
