VinePair reports that increasingly early grape harvests are creating logistical as well as viticultural problems for wineries as climate change shifts traditional picking dates. Domaine Lafage in France’s Roussillon began harvesting on 23 July, while producers on California’s Central Coast also started roughly six to eight weeks earlier than what was historically considered normal. Beyond questions of ripeness and alcohol levels, earlier harvests can disrupt seasonal labour, winery preparation, equipment scheduling and other operations designed around the traditional late-summer and autumn timetable.
