It’s Not All Doom and Gloom for British Farmers, Just Ask the Winemakers

Country Life reports that vineyards across southern England are celebrating another strong harvest following an exceptionally warm growing season. Rathfinny Wine Estate in East Sussex expects yields approximately 30% higher than in 2025, comparable with its bumper 2023 harvest, with production anticipated to reach around 30,000 cases of sparkling wine. Nyetimber is similarly optimistic, with head winemaker Cherie Spriggs forecasting production of approximately 1.5 million bottles from the 2026 vintage. Producers attribute these favourable results to warmer conditions and improved grape ripening, although the article emphasises the substantial financial demands of establishing vineyards and producing traditional-method sparkling wines. With some wines requiring several years of ageing before release, strong harvests such as 2026 are particularly important for the long-term financial viability of English wine businesses.
