UK Drinks Industry Condemns 4.55% Alcohol Duty Rise

Harpers Wine & Spirit Trade News reports that the UK drinks industry has reacted with frustration to the Autumn Budget, which includes a 4.55% increase in alcohol duty. The Wine and Spirit Trade Association estimates the increase will add approximately 14p to the price of a bottle of Prosecco. WineGB criticised the government’s failure to introduce targeted relief for domestic wine producers, including changes to wine duty, tourism incentives and Small Producer Relief. Although hospitality businesses welcomed changes to business rates, industry representatives warned that higher alcohol taxation would intensify pressure on producers, retailers and consumers.
