OENO One has published new peer-reviewed research demonstrating that winegrowers can substantially reduce pesticide use while maintaining commercially acceptable grape yields. Researchers worked with 19 winegrowers across three regions of south-western France, evaluating four vineyard management approaches over two growing seasons. Integrated pest management reduced pesticide treatment frequency by an average of 32.1% against the French High Environmental Value reference, while a zero-residue approach achieved a 42.2% reduction. Both generally maintained yields and reduced fungicide costs, although an exclusively biological treatment programme produced inconsistent disease control and greater financial risks. The findings suggest that targeted pesticide reductions are feasible in commercial vineyards, but wider trials are necessary before the methods can be recommended across different regions and grape varieties.
